Interview Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. Does the MSTP at CWRU assist with interview costs?
A. The MSTP covers the cost of all lodging, meals, and ground transportation while you're here, but you must pay for your own transportation to and from Cleveland.
Q. Is my School of Medicine (University Program) interview included in the MSTP interview?
A. Yes. Your interview schedule will include School of Medicine information sessions and the two required School of Medicine interviews: one with an Admissions Committee member (this is a separate committee from the MSTP Steering Committee) and one with a current medical student. The Admissions Committee makes admission decisions based on the evaluations and recommendations from both the committee member interview and the student interview.
Q. How are the interviewing faculty chosen?
A. A Steering Committee member will review your file and recommend MSTP mentors whose research interests match your own. We also encourage you to look over our mentors list and request interviews with MSTP mentors whose research is of interest to you. Your requests will be included in your interview schedule whenever possible.
Q. How should I prepare for the interview?
A. Reviewing your own research and being ready to discuss it (not just present a prepared statement about it) is the most important preparation. About a week before the interview, we will e-mail you the particulars about your visit, including your interview schedule. A review of your interviewers' web pages will give you an idea of questions you can ask them. You should expect to spend part of the interview talking about their research in addition to yours.
Q. When will I find out about my status after the interview?
A. The MSTP Steering Committee meets once a month to make admission decisions, and you will be notified of your status as soon as possible after the meeting. Each of your interviewers submits an evaluation of your interview, and their opinion as to how well you would fit into the MSTP here. The School of Medicine Admissions Committee also forwards its evaluation and admission decision to the Steering Committee, who will place your application in one of three categories:
Admit. You will be notified by telephone, e-mail, and US Mail.
Wait List. The Steering Committee judges you to be fully qualified for the program, and you may be admitted if a slot becomes available. You will be notified by e-mail of your Wait List status, and by telephone and e-mail if your status changes. You may check on your status at any time by contacting the MSTP office.
Reject. You will be notified by e-mail and US Mail.
Q. If my application to the MSTP is rejected, will I still be considered for the MD program?
A. If you indicated on your secondary application (CWRU iApply) that you were applying to both the MSTP and the University Program, then your application will be reconsidered by the School of Medicine Admissions Committee.
