Year 1
The medical curriculum for MSTP students is almost identical to that for traditional medical students at Case. The first year curriculum begins in early July. Classes are generally held between 8 am and 1 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. This time includes lectures, laboratories, clinical correlation presentations, and small discussion groups. Other times are used for clinical training and individualised study, including graduate school courses and research rotations.
MSTP students are expected to take a graduate course during the afternoon. This is intended to help complete many graduate course requirements prior to beginning work on their PhD.
Medical school courses are graded on a pass/fail basis. However, MSTP students uniquely receive letter grades for both their graduate school and medical school courses. This is to allow for credit in the graduate school, which requires grades, but does not affect the student's standing in the medical school. The medical school year one is concluded with a comprehensive examination, which covers all information covered during the school year.
